In a report published in July 2023, entitled "Deaths during or following police contact" in reference to the reports carried about the death of Craig Clegg, I believe the following information carried in the report to be of use in the reporting of this case, as background

In the 2022/2023 financial year, 23 people died in or following police custody (they had been detained by police or were in police cells when the death occured or no more than an hour after a police encounter). Of these people their ages ranged from 20 to 93, 83% were white, 9% were black, 4% were of mixed race and 4% were Asian.

Of those 23, 57% had mental health concerns, with 31% of those having been detained under the Mental Health Act, and overall 91% of them were known to have a connection to either alcohol or drugs (the definition being: "at the time of their arrest they had recently consumed, were intoxicated by, in possession of, or had known issues with alcohol and/or drugs" of which 38% died as a result of that connection.

With regard to the cause of death, 87% were investigated by the IOPC, and of those cases 40% died after exposure to a police cell, 25% died in hospital and 15% died in a police cell with the causes ranging from suicide, aneurysm, overdose, internal bleeding and alcoholic overdose, multi organ failure due to car crash, blunt force trauma, heart disease and heart attack.
