THE Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have concluded their investigation into whether Merseyside Police are to blame for the death of bodybuilder Craig Clegg – but a statement on their findings now rests with the coroner.
On February 10, the IOPC confirmed that their investigation had concluded. They said they were arranging a meeting with the family in order to share the report with them.
Nine days later, having shared the findings with Craig's family, the IOPC then said they were now in dialogue with the coroner about what they were happy to be disclosed publicly prior to an eventual inquest.
The IOPC have been investigating the conduct of Merseyside Police after they were called to the Lydiate area of Liverpool at about 10.45pm on September 16, 2024, following a 'concern for safety' request. The call came from a member of the public who was concerned Craig's safety.
Craig was, however, later taken from the scene to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The IOPC have studied written statements from officers who came into contact with Craig on the night of his death. They have looked at body-worn video footage, together with police call logs from the evening in question.
As frontdouble.com reported in September, if the IOPC finds there is a case of misconduct/gross misconduct or an indication of a criminal offence by the police following the death of bodybuilder Craig Clegg, a file will be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Clegg was a NABBA stalwart and won the Over 45s category at the federation's North West competition in 2023. He was a regular qualifier for the Mr Universe competition and won a number of titles during his career.
