MEN'S Physique athlete Adam Wallace took Detroit by storm – and is now targeting his PCA Pro Card at the Scottish Championships on Sunday.
Wallace, who turns 37 on Monday, April 7, chose to compete at the Detroit Pro/Am last Saturday in a bid to raise his profile as a coach.
Not only did he win his class, but Wallace went on to be crowned overall men's physique champion. Not bad considering he had to make alternative plans after his first-choice show changed dates.
He said: "The original plan was to compete in the Muscle Contest in Japan. But with the dates shifting slightly this wasn't possible. So the Detroit show was chosen due to the quality of the contest last year. And it offered an opportunity to meet family in Boston that I'd never met.
"It was also a way for me to gain more exposure to potentially help with my coaching. The show meant a great deal. Stepping outside of your comfort zone, in front of a new crowd and judges, allowed me to test my character. To walk away with the overall – with what I would say is my best look to date – helps drive me to keep improving.
"The show itself ran extremely well and smooth. Everything from registration to tan and back stage was well directed and organised. The chance to meet individuals I have huge respect for and who inspire me and see how humble they are, along with making the time to converse with everyone they met, just showed that this sport and the community is something special."
The contest did not secure him an IFBB Pro League card but that remains in his sights. However, first up is his bid to win a PCA Pro Card at the Scottish Championships on Sunday. This time, Wallace will compete in the Men's Masters Physique category.
He said: "It [the contest] was never about that [winning an IFBB Pro League card] for me. This show was to have some fun and gain the experience and some exposure. My next step is the PCA Scotland for the PCA Pro Card. I hold the PCA in a very high regard due to the standard of athletes and the way they respect and look after them."
If Wallace can bring that same razor-sharp condition, few would bet against him securing that Pro Card this Sunday. His midsection alone is one of the best to grace a Men's Physique category in this country. And he has just proved it goes beyond the UK by winning in the USA. He came close to winning his PCA pro status last year, only to finish second at the Universe competition.
Regardless of the outcome this Sunday, Wallace has arguably bigger plans. After the PCA Scotland, he will be focusing on winning an IFBB Pro League card, once he moves back to New Zealand in August. Wallace lived there for four years from 2016, moving back to the UK to be with his dad, who was fighting stage four cancer. His dad survived against the odds. Now, though, Wallace is set to return.
He explained: "As soon as I moved back here, I found myself back in bodybuilding as the scene is much bigger here, although it has now improved over there since 2020. We are very much looking forward to getting back to New Zealand. The UK has served its purpose well, allowed me to find bodybuilding again and build a good career."
Frontdouble wishes Wallace all the very best of luck, although we are certain he will not need it.
