Biology, pro status and the attitude that earns respect – Sibel Osman

Masters athlete Sibel Osman

In the Masters Series finale, Sibel Osman tackles hormones, mobility, natural vs. assisted and the attitude that separates turning pro from being pro.

In the final instalment of the Masters Series, Sibel Osman turns to the physical realities most competitors don't discuss openly: perimenopause, menopause and the hormonal shifts that reshape a female athlete's body later in life.

For those starting out at 50-plus, she is blunt; years of muscle atrophy mean beginning from what is effectively "ground zero", making growth harder to achieve.

Her advice is unambiguous: work with coaches who specialise specifically in Masters athletes and hormones, not generalists.

Mobility matters just as much as muscle, she argues. Stage presence is "performance art" and stiffness – often more pronounced with age – can undercut even the best-built physique, particularly in federations demanding individual posing routines.

She is equally direct about the natural-versus-assisted conversation, framing it as another dimension of "staying in your lane" – one she says matters more, not less, as athletes get older.

The sharpest distinction Osman draws, though, is between turning pro and being pro. Earning a pro card on a given day's line-up, she says, does not make anyone automatically competitive at professional level. It can just as easily place someone at the bottom of the pro food chain as the top of the amateur one. Her own approach: do not rush a status you are not yet equipped to hold.

That leads to her closing message on attitude. Turning pro comes with responsibility – as a role model, an ambassador for the sport, a representative for sponsors – and there is no room for entitlement.

Osman says she has noticed a strain of urgency and entitlement creeping into parts of the Masters community and her answer is simple: stay humble, stay respectful and remember what you represent.
